Refusals on the motorway: warnings are triggered, complaints in the most serious cases
The abandonment of waste on the motorway has grown in recent years, becoming a constant of incivility. CAV has placed mobile cameras in the lay-bys
Incidents of waste abandonment on the motorway decreased, also thanks to the deterrence effect caused by the new pitch cameras.
However, the phenomenon persists and it is for this reason that Concessioni Autostradali Venete has decided to go to the facts: the first warnings are issued, in the case of recidivism also the information to the competent authorities, while for the most serious cases, such as the abandonment of waste dangerous, we will proceed directly with the criminal report, as required by the relevant legislation.
Waste on the highway
The abandonment of waste on the motorway has grown in recent years, becoming a constant of incivility. For this reason, Concession Autostradali Venete decided last year, both for reasons of environmental protection and to contain disposal costs, to place mobile cameras, in rotation, on the pitches along the A57-Tangenziale di Mestre, the A4 Padua-Venice, and the Passante di Mestre.
The first results did not take long to arrive, with a decrease in waste recovered on the pitch, despite a return of traffic to almost normalized regimes. Unfortunately, however, the phenomenon is difficult to eradicate completely, despite the high probability for offenders to incur penalties.
Urban waste
In 2021, thanks to the deterrence activity undertaken, the abandonment of waste similar to urban waste decreased: 112,580 kilograms of materials abandoned and recovered on the pitch, of which about half came from illicit contributions, because of a clear housekeeper.
There was also a decrease in waste hazardous to health and the environment, such as oil, paints, appliances, batteries and other materials: last year they reached 11,958 kilograms (in previous years the average traveled around 17,000 kilograms) and of these about 30-40% was collected right in the lay-bys.
Abandonment of tires
On the other hand, the abandonment of tires, whole or in pieces, is increasing, also due to the resumption of traffic (especially heavy) after the Covid break: 11,400 kilograms, compared to 10 thousand the previous year.
The controls
After having put into operation-specific cameras for the lay-bys, to further reduce the practice of abandoning the Venetian Motorway Concessions, it will now proceed, after the appropriate checks, to send warnings to the individuals identified.
In the event of recidivism, the reporting to the competent authorities will also be triggered, while in the case of cases of abandonment of hazardous or “commercial” waste, the Company will file a criminal complaint.
The Concessionaire reminds us that the containers present in the motorway lay-bys are intended for the delivery of waste produced during the journey only: in no way is it allowed to use them for the unloading of waste from other sources.
Among other things, parking on the motorway lay-by is only allowed for emergency reasons, and therefore stopping to get rid of waste is not only illegal but also prohibited for traffic safety reasons.
